Fill your holiday wish lists for young children, tweens and teens at the 2012 Book Fair.? The Scholastic Book Fair is Monday, November 26 through Thursday, November 29 in the Terrace Room.? Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.? Bring CASH or CREDIT CARD, no check accepted!!!


St. Francis House Collection Drive
The College is collecting items for the St. Francis House. These items include:?? Socks, New or gently used jackets/coats/hoodies (all sizes), Toiletries products (travel or full size), Feminine hygiene products, Combs and brushes, Razors, Deodorant.?? We will be collecting items until December 18th. If you choose to participate, please bring your donation or donated items to the collection box in 140 Norman Hall.

THE 2013-2014 COLLEGE OF EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE
The College of Education awards scholarships to graduate and undergraduate students through an annual scholarship selection process.? Eligibility for individual awards is determined by the College of Education based on a student?s Fall 2013 classification.? Students who will be enrolled in Fall 2013 or have applied for admission in Fall 2013 are eligible to apply for College of Education Scholarships.? All information submitted will be verified and only complete applications will be considered.? Special Olympics Young Athletes Program ? Sunday, December 2nd
Balance 180, a newly formed local non-profit organization, is partnering with UF faculty and students and Special Olympics Florida to educate the Gainesville community about the importance and value of integrating children of all abilities through sports activities.?? How can you help???Come out on December 2nd?to cheer on 24 young athletes as they showcase their newly learned skills, while raising awareness about their abilities. UF?s first lady, Chris Machen, PHHP Dean Michael Perri, and Gainesville?s Mayor Craig Lowe will be joining us and lending their support to our young athletes and this important cause. So please, come out, bring your family or a friend and join us on -? Sunday, December 2nd, from 3:00-6:00pm at St. Francis Catholic High School.?? This free event promises an exciting afternoon with lots of smiles, entertainment, food and drinks. Raffle tickets and great prizes will also be available.?Your attendance will help us raise awareness?about the importance of public health initiatives for individuals with disabilities and their integration into our community.? Course Announcement
EDG 6931 (Section 023D): Academic Writing (Spring, 2013) ~ Monday (Periods 6-8)
This seminar is designed to enhance the capacity of doctoral students from all academic disciplines to write for academic purposes. It guides students through the entire process of academic writing that includes understanding the task at hand, planning the work, conducting library research, reading to gather information, developing audience awareness, appropriating discursive resources, working with other people?s ideas and voices, and using feedback and editing to improve writing. The course focuses on exploring the ways in which language is used as a creative resource for presenting information, structuring text, embedding perspectives, developing argument, referencing sources, and addressing audience needs in academic writing. It combines focused discussion of key features and issues of academic writing with practical applications through critical analysis of model essays as well as careful critique of students? own writing. The course also provides an insider?s perspective on writing for scholarly publications, including journal/publisher selection, manuscript review process, overcoming rejections, and other tips for getting published.

Course Announcement
SYO 6535: SOCIAL INEQUALITY ? Spring 2013
The course adopts an inter-disciplinary approach to studying social mobility and inequalities in income, education and health in the United States.? There are no prerequisites for the class and there will be many opportunities for students to advance their current research. ?The class is open to both grads and advanced undergrads from outside the sociology department. If any students think they might register, it would be ideal if they could contact me before Tuesday of next week (10/14) to let me know and also indicate any preference for the timing of the class. This? will greatly help the sociology department in planning our spring course scheduling.? Syllabus attached.

Annual Poinsettia Show and Sale
The Poinsettia Show and Sale hosted by the Environmental Horticulture Dept. and the Student Club will be Thursday and Friday, Dec. 6 and 7.? This has become a popular event and has grown to 1,500 visitors last year.? The Student Club will have 4,000 plants for sale, and there are many new and different styles and sizes.? Hours are 8 am to 5 pm on Thursday, and 8 am to 3 pm on Friday.? More information on the Poinsettia Show and Sale is available at http://www.gatorpoinsettia.com/

Living History Days, Saturday, November 24, 9AM ? 4PM
History comes to life at the little farm in the Piney Woods of Morningside Nature Center. Join us for Living History Days as park staff and volunteers interpret day-to-day life on an 1870?s rural Florida farm. This free program takes place on the Living History Farm. The Living History Farm is open to the public from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday.


Florida Alternative Breaks Spaghetti Lunch, Thursday, November 29, 11AM ? 3PM
Florida Alternative Breaks (FAB) is having their all-you-can-eat Spaghetti Lunch, salad and dessert at the Episcopal Chapel (across from Library West). This event will support FAB and tickets are $5 at the Center for Leadership and Service (Peabody 301) and $7 at the door. This is also a chance to meet FAB trip site leaders and other participants.? Neutral Gator Tree Planting, Saturday, December 1, 9AM ? 12PM
Come join Neutral Gator for a tree planting at Alachua Conservation Trust?s (ACT) Prairie Creek Preserve. Neutral Gator has partnered with local non-profit ACT to restore locally acquired lands with indigenous trees. Every month Neutral Gator hosts a tree planting event and gives volunteers an opportunity to get their hands dirty and make a positive impact.? AESP National Conference Student Scholarship Opportunity, Sunday, November 30 Deadline
Are you a student pursuing an education in the energy industry? Would you like to attend the Association on Energy Services Professionals (AESP) National Conference, in Orlando, FL, on January 28 ? 31, 2013 free of charge? Winter 2012 Humanities Grant/Fellowship Proposal Review, Monday, December 17 Deadline
Are you a UF faculty member or graduate student in the humanities and preparing to submit an external grant or fellowship proposal? Would you like more feedback on an existing proposal? The Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere would like to help.? Faculty members and graduate students in the humanities are invited to submit complete draft proposals (minus reference letters) for single-blind review by an interdisciplinary panel of three UF referees with experience at the national level.?
