When Huawei revealed the Ascend Mate at CES this year, it felt like smartphones had reached an end point -- they surely couldn't get any larger. We've since been proven wrong by Samsung's Galaxy Mega 6.3, but the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate has gone on sale first, and it's every bit as intimidating as it was in January. The question is whether or not Huawei has more than just size on its side. Yes, Oklahoma Truthers Think Obama Used His Anti-Scandal Weather Magic
On Sunday, six days after a furious and deadly tornado, President Obama will reportedly head to Moore, Oklahoma. It took less than 48 hours for the truthers to furiously accuse the White House ? perhaps by way of George Soros ? of creating the tornado itself. If you thought 9/11 conspiracy theorists were bad, or the Sandy Hook and Boston bombing truthers were reckless, Obama's meteorological manipulation ? all to distract a country from three Washington scandals ? well, that might be a new level of ridiculous.

"Of course there's weather weapon stuff going on ? we had floods in Texas like fifteen years ago, killed thirty-something people in one night. Turned out it was the Air Force," Alex Jones said on his radio show?Tuesday afternoon, adding he wasn't sure if a government "weather weapon" was used against Moore. And being "unsure" of something is exactly the way conspiracy theories work: ?It allows people like Jones to sow doubt, float an untrue story ? in this case, about the government creating a massive tornado ? while at the same time giving truthers a loophole to squeeze through, without being held accountable or stating on the record anything they actually do believe.?

The conspiracy theory of the moment goes something like this: The Obama administration is being asked how much they knew about three apparent scandals ? Benghazi, the IRS, the Justice Department's double leak investigations ? and in order to make Americans think about something else, the administration manipulated the weather and created the mile-wide Moore tornado.

Officials at a press conference in Moore Wednesday afternoon said that 12,000-13,000 homes had been affected, with property damage of $1.5-$2 billion, and six people still missing. Toddlers died in this tornado, the medical examiner's office said late Thursday morning. So, yes, it's been distracting. Obviously, there's been a little less coverage of scandalmania this week.

But, obviously, no one in the administration is a mutant who can psionically change weather patterns like Storm of the X-Men. So, yes, the Oklahoma tornado truthers claim the administration whipped up a storm that killed 24 people through HAARP, the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, in Alaska. Here's a screen grab of a contributor post on Before It's News, a citizen journalist website that's home to many of these conspiracy theories, from a contributor who says this is "compelling evidence" that HAARP is at work:?

As Gawker's Ken Layne writes, the "stated goal of HAARP is to study the ionosphere and how the spectrum of radio waves works within these upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere." Essentially, HAARP researches communications. But there are budding?conspiracy theories?that HAARP?could be ultimately used to disrupt the ionosphere, and manipulate weather patterns. As one Redditor pointed out, one of the permutations of the conspiracy theory in Moore is that the left-wing financier George "the Sorcerer" Soros is behind all of this.?
Jones's theory is a little bit different. The left-leaning Media Matters has the segment of his show where Jones claims that if people in Oklahoma saw helicopters and aircrafts "in and around the clouds, spraying and doing things" that "if you saw that you better bet your bottom dollar they did this, but who knows if they did. You know, that's the thing, we don't know."
And?another contributor on Before Its News says the whole thing is a farce ? that no one is actually dead, even though they very much are. A fellow conspiracy theorist on that site says that the fake bodies post is a planted post, seeded by the?government?and designed to make conspiracy theorists look dumb:?
You don't have to believe any of these to see how dumb these people really are ? to think terrible events?like the Newtown shootings,?like the Boston marathon bombs,?were all the work of the Obama administration, who might be somehow, somewhat hiding something even more terrible than killing its own citizens. Never mind that there was burgeoning meteorological evidence that a saggy jet stream coupled with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico?on top of the Plains region created a perfect weather stew for horrifying tornadoes in Oklahoma. Or the fact that for the past 63 years in Oklahoma's history, May has been the month that has continually seen the most tornadoes, according to statistics from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Or that 22 tornadoes ? some of them truly massive and deadly ? have hit the town of Moore since 1890.?Because who wants to hear the truth when you have weather-manipulating presidents??

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? An embezzling case that began with a chef being accused of stealing food from Virginia's Executive Mansion and morphed into a political scandal involving two of the state's most powerful politicians has some people wondering: What goes on behind the wide double doors of the governor's house?
The governor's mansion is in some ways a dichotomy: It is perhaps the state's highest-profile office, yet also one of the only places Gov. Bob McDonnell and his family can retreat for privacy. Past and present directors describe a place where people must carefully watch how money is spent, yet few formal rules or laws exist dictating how it must be run because employees have a new boss every four years. The state's constitution limits governors to a single four-year term.
"There's no law or regulation that says the next administration has to do anything I did," said Amy Bridge, who directed the mansion for former Govs. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. "You have to be cognizant of the fact that every family is different, everyone is going to use the mansion in a different manner."
Mansion operations have come under scrutiny since former Executive Mansion chef Todd Schneider, who also owned a catering company, was charged with four counts of felony embezzlement. State investigators have suggested Schneider ran the kitchen with minimal oversight, and his attorneys have written in court papers that he was sometimes directed to take food as payment for his services and that Gov. Bob McDonnell's family took liquor, Gatorade, cookware and other provisions from the kitchen for use elsewhere. McDonnell has declined to comment on the allegations or the pending case against the chef.
That case has led federal investigators to look into a wealthy businessman's gifts to McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who has recused himself from the case.
There are no universal manuals or guidelines for how the nation's 50 governor's mansions must operate, according to the National Governor's Association. That leaves most state executives with wide latitude to run the homes as they see fit.
Indeed, Virginia's mansion doesn't have any set rules ? no mission statement, no policy manual and no laws specifically governing its operations. What McDonnell calls "the people's house" operates with a necessary balance of oversight and flexibility, said Sarah Scarbrough, the current director.
Bridge wrote a mansion policy manual during the Warner administration from 2002 to 2006, but Scarbrough said nobody has been able to find it, so she is developing her own written guidelines to leave for her successor.
"This is where we work, but also a private residence," she said. "It's nice that the flexibility is there because each administration has its own priorities."
The top official overseeing the mansion is the governor's chief of staff, who works off-site but has broad oversight responsibility. The middle manager is the mansion director, Scarbrough, who handles day-to-day operations. Also working out of offices in the basement or the carriage house out back are an assistant director, butler, chef, housekeeper and two assistants to the first lady.
Some governors spend more time at the mansion than others. For example, the Warners kept their home in northern Virginia and stayed there periodically during his term, while Kaine rarely if ever stayed at his private house in Richmond. Also, those two governors had children living at home, while McDonnell's children are college-age or older and are not at the mansion full time.
Despite the flexibility, other things don't change. For example, at least one member of the governor's security detail is always on duty, and the Department of General Services handles all the maintenance, repairs and yard work. And for more than two decades, the Division of Selected Agency Support Services has overseen accounting and purchasing procedures that allow the state to pick up the tab for necessities like cleaning supplies and groceries but require the family to pay for extras like pet products and clothing alterations.
A document lists the "allowable" expenses and examples of what the governor has to pay for out of pocket. Scarbrough said that if a purchase falls in a gray area, she asks the governor to pay. According to reimbursement records, the McDonnell family has reimbursed the Virginia treasurer for such items as energy drinks and $500 for food and alcohol for a Notre Dame football watch party at the mansion in 2010, among other items.
Bridge said she, too, was scrupulous about fiscal responsibility.
"Having purchasing guidelines is always a very good idea," she said. "I was very uptight about our budget. Every month I'd get a report on purchases from Support Services and I would go over it with a fine-tooth comb."
The mansion's longtime butler has a mansion credit card, and Scarbrough and the chef are authorized users.
The basement is the business hub of the operation. The main floor is a semi-public space, open for scheduled tours and available for special events from Easter egg hunts to awards ceremonies, when not in use by the governor for meetings or receptions. Employees and the governor's family have access to those spaces, including the basement kitchen.
Scarbrough said the chef has a substantial amount of freedom in operating the kitchen, which spent more than $102,000 on food and dietary supplies in the 2012 fiscal year, according to figures obtained by The Associated Press. The chef is responsible for the first family's private meals, as well as catering receptions and other events held at the mansion.
Scarbrough said nobody supervised Schneider's every move, but the same can be said for all the mansion employees.
"We all have bosses and supervisors, but also everyone is very busy and trusts one another," she said. "So there is a good level of autonomy here."
She declined to address Schneider's claim that he was told to take food in lieu of payment, saying she could not comment on any aspect of the criminal case.
Upstairs is the family living quarters, which includes a smaller kitchen for snacks or quick meals not prepared by the chef. It's the only private space in the house.
"You're trying to help them lead as normal life as possible in a fish bowl," Bridge said. "It's a family dealing with homework and birthday parties and high school dances and everything else a family goes through."

There's no sign of the app update on either platform just yet, but it'll get there when it gets there.

Sony's not showing its new PlayStation 4 just yet, but here's a taste (video)
What does the PlayStation 4 look like? We didn't find out back at Sony's big New York City reveal gala in February, but it looks like we're edging ever closer to that moment: June 10th at 6PM PT seems to be exactly when we'll find out. Hey, wouldn't you know it, that lines up with Sony's E3 2013 press conference, which we'll be liveblogging right here on Engadget. The coincidences simply won't stop! A new tease video today gives us a few glimpses at what we might see in a few weeks, but for now you'll have to be sated by looking through individual video frames. Take a look (and then another, and then another) just below the break.
The PlayStation 4 has a projected launch of "Holiday 2013," and is Sony's next entry in its long-running PlayStation line of game consoles. The company's already shown off its new DualShock 4 controller, as well as its PlayStation 4 Eye motion camera (akin to Microsoft's Kinect), and we expect to see not just the console, but a smattering of other PlayStation-related news at the June 10th press conference. Today's tease comes just one day before Microsoft's expected next-gen Xbox reveal event kicks off in Redmond. Oh you guys!

To turn the console on, all you have to say is "Xbox, on." From there, it gets even easier. Want to watch TV? Say "Xbox, watch TV," and it drops you right into a live TV feed. Want to listen to music or even watch movies? Say "play music" or "Xbox, go to movies."
Snap Mode
Then you can also use Windows 8's Snap Mode, which lets you run two apps at once. The way this works is one app can be snapped to the side of the screen to run while you're watching a show or playing a game. So you could be looking at a movie, and head over to IMBD while it's on for more details. Watching something while you browse for something else? No problem. And then there are video calls. Snap Mode will also take you to Skype chat say, while you're perusing Netflix. Pretty awesome stuff.
The ease of navigation is key here. If you want to see guide, just say "Xbox, show the guide." Created especially by Microsoft, the guide also has full Kinect voice controls. You can again, just tell the console what TV show you want to watch or what channel you'd like to flip to. From here, again, you can switch back to your favorites by commanding the console to take you to that screen. If you want to go home, say "go home," or go to a Trending page to see what's most popular on TV. It looks like the ultimate remote that isn't even a remote?insanely simple to use and to do things you actually want to do.

Xbox One is launching around the world "later this year." We don't know exactly what that means (we've heard in time for the holidays), but we'll most likely get more information in a few weeks at E3.
