PARIS (AP) ? Thousands of demonstrators marched peacefully Sunday in Paris to denounce austerity measures in Europe that have sparked violent protests in other EU countries struggling to avert fiscal crises.
The march, organized largely by the Left Front party and the Communists, comes before the French parliament's debate this week on a European fiscal treaty. Organizers put turnout at more than 80,000; Paris police declined to provide an estimate.
The protest exposed political pressures faced by President Francois Hollande ? whose popularity has been sinking in recent polls ? and notably from some ostensible allies of the left. It was the biggest demonstration of its kind since Hollande was elected in the spring, just weeks before his Socialists won control of the National Assembly.
The treaty would set up the European Stability Mechanism bailout fund that European leaders hope will help calm a debt crisis that threatens the eurozone and the global economy.
The main conservative opposition party and most Socialist lawmakers back the treaty. But it has splintered the French left: Far-left parties, the Greens and some dissident Socialists oppose it. The measure is nonetheless likely to pass in parliament because the two biggest parties generally favor it.
On Friday, the French government presented a budget that included high taxes on the wealthiest, but which critics say lacks fundamental reforms that could jumpstart economic growth.
Austerity has fanned recent violence in places like Spain and Greece.
CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles demanded justice on Sunday for the shooting of three of his activists while President Hugo Chavez promised to run a more efficient government if he wins next weekend's election.
With the South American OPEC member's October 7 presidential vote shaping into a close fight, tensions are high, and the worst violence of the campaign occurred on Saturday when gunmen killed three pro-Capriles activists in Barinas state.
"Yesterday, sadly, violence took three lives, something that should never have happened," Capriles told a vast rally in Caracas that appeared to be the largest of his campaign.
"I want to tell their families, and those angels in heaven, that we are going to defeat violence on the 7th of October."
Capriles' Primero Justicia (Justice First) party said the assailants had fired from a van, which witnesses identified as belonging to a state institution, after Chavez supporters blocked an opposition motorcade.
The government did not confirm that version but promised an investigation into what it said was an isolated incident.
"Anything that harms peace and stability must be condemned," Chavez's campaign chief, Jorge Rodriguez, said.
Venezuela is awash with arms, and voters cite violent crime as their No. 1 worry. There had been some gunshots and clashes at previous opposition rallies but no deaths.
TIGHT RACE
Capriles has hammered Chavez daily on his record with day-to-day problems such as crime, blackouts and shoddy infrastructure - drawing a frank response from the president.
"Efficiency, that is one of my promises for the next period. We have to correct things," the 58-year-old Chavez said on Sunday in his most direct comment on a theme the opposition hopes could sway former "Chavistas" into their camp.
In recent days, Chavez has added into his campaign speeches an acknowledgement of Venezuelans' frustration with grassroots problems but has said things would be far worse under Capriles, who he paints as a heartless capitalist elitist.
Capriles, 40, is a state governor with a centrist vision of a Brazil-style, pro-business government with strong welfare policies.
With one week to go, polls are mixed, leading both sides to claim they are heading for victory. Venezuelans are fearful of violence if the result is close and then in dispute.
Of the half-dozen best-known pollsters in Venezuela, a majority put Chavez ahead but they also show Capriles creeping up in recent weeks, and two polls put him just ahead.
Despite two bouts of cancer since mid-2011, Chavez has declared himself completely cured and is trying to recapture his old energy to win another six-year term.
He campaigned in two states on Sunday while Capriles had his biggest turnout yet at the rally in Caracas.
Western investors hope the more business-friendly Capriles will win and end a nationalization drive and other radical policies that have polarized Venezuela like never before and made Chavez one of the world's most controversial leaders.
Chavez promises to "deepen" socialism if he wins. That would likely mean continued spending on his popular welfare "missions," more investment from politically aligned allies like China and Iran, new confrontations with Venezuela's private sector and continued support for fellow leftists governments in Latin America such as Cuba and Nicaragua.
"The first thing we are going to do with our victory is something like put a lockdown on what we have achieved, to prevent any going backwards. That would be terrible," Chavez said in an interview on state TV.
After election wins in the past, Chavez has launched nationalization or constitutional reform drives.
Opposition leaders are angry at Chavez's use of state resources in his campaign but say the electronic-based voting system should be hard to rig on election day, since they will have their own observers at most voting booths.

The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is a major contributor to the recent mysterious death of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journalGenome Biology finds that specific proteins, released by damaged larvae and in the antennae of adult honey bees, can drive hygienic behavior of the adults and promote the removal of infected larvae from the hive.
V. destructor sucks the blood (hemolymph) of larval and adult bees leaving them weakened and reducing the ability of their immune systems to fight off infections. Not that honey bees have strong immune systems in the first place since they have fewer immunity genes than solitary insects such as flies and moths. These tiny mites can also spread viral disease between hosts. This double onslaught is thought to be a significant contributor to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).
But all is not lost - honey bees have evolved a way to fight back: hygienic behavior where diseased or parasitized larvae are removed from their brood cells, and Varroa-sensitive hygienic behavior which they use to reduce the number of reproductive mites on remaining larvae.
To find exactly how bees respond to hive infections, researchers from Canada looked at the natural behavioral of bees in the presence of damaged larvae and compared this to protein differences in the larvae and adults. After scanning 1200 proteins the team found that several proteins, including LOC552009 (of unknown function but similar to ApoO), found in the antennae of adults were associated with both uncapping brood cells and the removal of larvae. Other proteins were involved in olfaction or in signal transduction, probably helping the adults find infected larvae amongst a brood.
In damaged larvae, transglutaminase, a protein involved in blood clotting, was upregulated, which appeared to be a key component in regulating the adult's behavior. Other proteins indicated adaptations to help fight infection, including chitin biosynthesis and immune responses.
Dr Leonard Foster from CHIBI at the University of British Columbia, who led this research said, "Bee keepers have previously focused on selecting bees with traits such as enhanced honey production, gentleness and winter survival. We have found a set of proteins which could be used to select colonies on their ability to resist Varroa mite infestation and can be used to find individuals with increased hygienic behavior. Given the increasing resistance of Varroa to available drugs this would provide a natural way of ensuring honey farming and potentially survival of the species."

The surgeon aboard the whaling vessel Hope was often covered in the blood of seals and other animals, his clothes frozen enough that he'd have to stand next to the ship's stove to thaw before undressing.
A first-time sailor, he wasn't supposed to take part in the clubbing of seals, but he did, and repeatedly fell into the frigid waters, nearly freezing to death.
A journal by the young man, written at age 20 in 1880, was published yesterday. ?The ?author? ?Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Best known for creating the ingenious detective Sherlock Holmes, Doyle was first a surgeon, and went along on the whaling ship after a friend of his backed out, according to a review of the book by the Daily Mail.

The journey was intense and bloody, and the sailors' job was to take as many seals and whales as possible. As noted by the Smithsonian, though, Doyle's journal of the trip isn't all blood and gore, and contains Doyle's neat prose and lovely illustrations of the ship and the terrain it explored in the Arctic Ocean. ?
The killing of whales was common at the time, although Doyle did write about his feelings of sympathy for the hunted animals. He also describes the beauty of the icy landscape and awe he felt upon seeing enormous humpback whales, which the sailors didn't hunt because they contained too little oil to make their capture worthwhile. Whale oil was valuable for its use in lamps, candle wax and other applications.
Doyle wrote about his experience in both fiction and nonfiction, which helped him first catch the eye of publishers. Although he completed medical school and briefly practiced as a surgeon, he soon realized his true talent lay in writing.
The account of his Arctic voyage is called "Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure" (British Library Publishing, 2012) and is available from the British Library Shop.

ASBURY PARK ? Special Olympics New Jersey athlete Courtney Dreyfus, 15, of Scotch Plains competed in One More Tri, a triathlon / duathlon / aquavelo held in Asbury Park on Sept. 23.
Dreyfus finished the full triathlon, which consisted of a 0.25-mile ocean swim followed by a 12-mile bike and then a three-mile run, with a time of 1:46:42.3.
Funds raised at One More Tri will benefit Special Olympics New Jersey, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in 24 Olympic-type sports for more than 22,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. All programs are offered completely free of charge, giving athletes continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
One More Tri was sanctioned by USA Triathlon and hosted by Asbury Park-based Eneractive Solutions.
That's the winning formula of one of the world's smallest predators, the soil bacteria Myxococcus xanthus, and a new study by scientists at Rice University and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School shows how Myxococcus xanthus uses the formula to spread, engulf and devour other bacteria.
The study, featured on the cover of this month's online issue of the journal PLOS Computational Biology, shows how the simple motions of individual bacteria are amplified within colonies of Myxococcus xanthus to form millions-strong waves moving outward in unison. The findings answer longstanding questions about how the waves form and the competitive edge they provide Myxococcus xanthus.
"When the cells at the edge of the colony are moving outward, they are unlikely to encounter another Myxococcus xanthus cell, so they keep moving forward," said lead author Oleg Igoshin, assistant professor of bioengineering at Rice. "When they are traveling the other way, back toward the rest of the colony, they are likely to encounter other cells of their kind, and when they pass beside one of these and touch, they get the signal to turn around."
Igoshin said the net effect is that the cells "spend more time moving outward than inward, and as a result, they spread faster."
Myxococcus xanthus is an oft-studied model organism in biology but, Igoshin said, it is one of the few well-studied organisms that lends itself to the study of systems biology, a rapidly growing field of life sciences that aims to model and discover emergent phenomena -- like the rippling waves of Myxococcus xanthus colonies -- that have a basis in genetics but only become apparent when cells cooperate.
"Most of the model bacteria that biologists selected for study in the lab were chosen because they were very good at growing on their own in a test tube and not sticking to the wall or to one another," Igoshin said. "When we were choosing model organisms, we lost a lot of the social properties that systems biologists like to study. Myxococcus xanthus is different in that people chose to study it because it grew into cool patterns and structures arising from cooperative behavior."
As a computational biologist, Igoshin specializes in creating mathematical models that accurately describe the behavior of living systems. Such models are useful for understanding the cellular and even genetic basis of emergent phenomena.
In the case of Myxococcus xanthus waves, Igoshin and Rice graduate student Haiyang Zhang and postdoctoral fellow Peng Shi created an agent-based model, a computer program that simulated the actions and interactions of individual cells to examine how they collectively produced Myxococcus xanthus waves.
The model showed that just three ingredients were needed to generate the rippling behavior:
When two cells moving toward one another have side-to-side contact, they exchange a signal that causes one of them to reverse.
A time interval after each reversal during which cells cannot reverse again.
Physical interactions that cause the cells to align.
To verify the model's accuracy, Igoshin's team partnered with UTHealth's Heidi Kaplan, associate professor of microbiology and molecular genetics. Kaplan and graduate students Zalman Vaksman and Douglas Litwin, both of the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston, used time-lapse images from microscopes to examine the behavior of Myxococcus xanthus waves. The experiments confirmed the relationships between wavelength, reversal time and cell velocity that had been predicted by the model.
"We also found an interesting flip side for the behavior, which was counterintuitive and unexpected," Kaplan said. "The same behavior that causes the waves to spread quickly and to cover newly found prey also allows Myxococcus xanthus cells to stay on a patch of food and not drift away until the food is devoured."
The exact biochemical signals that the cells use to sense their prey and signal one another to reverse are still a mystery, but the new study helps to narrow the field. For example, many signals between bacteria do not require physical contact, but the study found that the reversing behavior requires contact between cells.
"If the mechanism for this behavior can be found, it could prove useful for synthetic biologists who are interested in programming touch-induced functions into synthetic organisms," Igoshin said.
