LONDON (AP) ? Ryan Lochte turned his much-anticipated duel with Michael Phelps into a blowout, pulling away to win the Olympic 400-meter individual medley by more than 3 seconds Saturday night. Even more stunning: Phelps didn't even win a medal.

After barely qualifying for the evening final in a performance that hinted at trouble ahead, Phelps struggled to a fourth-place finish and was denied his 17th career medal. When it was done, he could barely pull himself out of the pool.

Brazil's Thiago Pereira took the silver, and Japan's Kosuke Hagino claimed the bronze ? beating Phelps by a barely comfortable 34-hundredths of a second for a spot on the podium.

Equestrian Ink: Meet Ziggy

This spring has been a sad time in our pet family with Dozer, the senior Lab, being put down, Lacey, our very old cat dying under the pool in the big storm, and then on Monday, Jake, our rescue mutt, having to be put down. Jake had changed from an energetic oldster (12) to an ailing oldster in a short amount of time. Initially we thought it was Lyme disease. Even though he had been vaccinated, it is not foolproof, and we began treating him with antibiotics. The vet found no abnormalities in his blood work, but when he sent us home, he said, "Let's hope it's Lyme. If not, it's probably something worse."

It was something worse. Jake quit eating, he began throwing up, and a second trip to the vet showed he had a huge tumor on his spleen. We asked the vet if we could put Jake in the car as if he was going home, and he?euthanized?him there. He died with his head on my ?husband's lap. ?Jake's death left a huge hole in the family and my heart. He'd been a challenging rescue, but he'd also been my shadow. Fang, aka princess Chihuahua, was left with no dog buddies, and I knew I better find another dog to share our lives with before school started and we had less time.

Meet Ziggy. Part bat (check out his ears in the photo below), part mini-pin, part Chihuahua. He came from Caring for Creatures, a fabulous rescue organization that plucks dogs and cats from high-kill shelters before they are put down. Ziggy's ?time was up. He is only one-year-old, he was at CFC for six weeks, and at least a month at the shelter where he came in as a stray, so I can't imagine what his brief life has been like. Fang and I met him at CFC (above) and although I knew Ziggy would be challenging because he was shy and afraid of men, we brought him home.

It's been four days, and I've learned quickly how to be leader of the pack to help reassure Ziggy that he is safe. Here he is resting after his fifth walk (and it's only lunchtime!) Fortunately, he's smart and learning quickly. Challenges are house-training--I haven't picked up on his "I need to go" cues--despite all the walks, and 'stranger' issues. He's super-sensitive to sounds and sights. I have no idea how he coped at the busy, noisy shelters. ?But I am learning what he needs, and he's learning all the rules that I (leader of the pack) have set down, Fang loves playing with him (growls added when he gets too rough), he loves my daughter, and he and my husband are slowly bonding.

Now if he can just find that CAT.

If anyone has a mini-pin, please send ANY suggestions on training. I have read they can be a handful. Ziggy seems to have enough of something "else" in him that he is eager to please, so my fingers are crossed. I do get the feeling he can ?never be allowed off-leash (Fang, aka princess, never has to be on a leash so I have been spoiled.). If he spots something moving, he wants to be after it in a flash.

Thank you for letting me share one more depressing "pet death" story, and I hope next post, to have ?great news on Ziggy's adjustment.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Microbes that convert electricity into methane gas could become an important source of renewable energy, according to scientists from Stanford and Penn State universities.

Researchers at both universities are raising colonies of microorganisms -- methanogens -- with the remarkable ability to turn electrical energy into pure methane, the key ingredient in natural gas. The goal is to create large microbial factories to transform clean electricity from solar, wind or nuclear power into renewable methane fuel and other valuable chemical compounds for industry.

"Most of today's methane is derived from natural gas, a fossil fuel," said Alfred Spormann, professor of chemical engineering and civil and environmental engineering at Stanford. "And many important organic molecules used in industry are made from petroleum. Our microbial approach would eliminate the need for using these fossil resources."

He added that all of the carbon dioxide released during combustion is derived from the atmosphere, and all of the electrical energy comes from renewables or nuclear power, which are also carbon dioxide free.

Methane-producing microbes could help solve the problem of what to do with surplus electricity generated by photovoltaic power stations and wind farms.

"While conceptually simple, there are significant hurdles to overcome before electricity-to-methane technology can be deployed at a large scale," said Bruce Logan, Evan Pugh Professor and Kappe Professor of Environmental Engineering, Penn State. "That's because the underlying science of how these organisms convert electrons into chemical energy is poorly understood."

Burning natural gas accelerates global warming by releasing carbon dioxide that's been trapped underground for millennia. The researchers wanted to take a "greener" approach to methane production. They envision large bioreactors filled with methanogens single-cell organisms that produce methane.

Methanogens cannot grow in the presence of oxygen. Instead, they regularly dine on atmospheric carbon dioxide and electrons borrowed from hydrogen gas. The byproduct of this microbial meal is pure methane, which methanogens excrete into the atmosphere.

The researchers plan to use this methane to fuel airplanes, ships and vehicles. In the ideal scenario, cultures of methanogens would be fed a constant supply of electrons generated from emissions-free power sources, such as solar cells, wind turbines and nuclear reactors. The microbes would use these clean electrons to metabolize carbon dioxide into methane, which can then be stockpiled and distributed via existing natural gas facilities and pipelines when needed.

Microbial methane is much more ecofriendly than ethanol and other biofuels, the researchers noted. Corn ethanol, for example, requires acres of cropland, as well as fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation and fermentation.

Methanogens are much more efficient, because they metabolize methane in just a few quick steps.

For this new technology to become commercially viable, a number of fundamental challenges must be addressed.

In 2009, Logan's lab was the first to demonstrate that a methanogen strain known as Methanobacterium palustre could convert an electrical current directly into methane. For the experiment, Logan and his Penn State colleagues built a reverse battery with positive and negative electrodes placed in a beaker of nutrient-enriched water.

"The microbes were about 80 percent efficient in converting electricity to methane," Logan said.

At Penn State, Logan's lab is designing and testing advanced cathode technologies that will encourage the growth of methanogens and maximize methane production. The Penn State team is also studying new materials for electrodes, including a carbon-mesh fabric that could eliminate the need for platinum and other precious metal catalysts.

"Many of these materials have only been studied in bacterial systems but not in communities with methanogens or other archaea," Logan said. "Our ultimate goal is to create a cost-effective system that reliably and robustly produces methane from clean electrical energy. It's high-risk, high-reward research, but new approaches are needed for energy storage and for making useful organic molecules without fossil fuels."

A new guide from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes a "scoring system" that computer security managers can use to assess the severity of security risks arising from software features that, while beneficial to accomplishing a task, are at least partially designed under an assumption that users are operating these features as intended.

NIST's Common Misuse Scoring System (CMSS) provides a systematic way for organizations to determine the severity of software feature misusedangerous or illicit email practices, for exampleso that the organization can determine how to handle the problem.

"No system is 100 percent secure: every system has vulnerabilities," according to the report. While attention often focuses on software flaws, for example system crashes, software features also introduce vulnerabilities because intentional or accidental misuses of software features have the potential to leak sensitive information, corrupt data, or reduce system availability.

NIST categorizes software vulnerabilities in three general categories. Software flawscoding errors that allow security breachesare an obvious problem. Configuration vulnerabilities come from setting the software up improperlyallowing a program access to data it shouldn't see, for instance. But software feature misuse is more subtle. With feature misuse, savvy attackers violate the trust assumptions that are inherent in software features to subvert a system's security.

For example, malicious users may undermine the security of email software. "Two common problems are social engineering and insider threats," explained Karen Scarfone, one of the publication's authors. When users open up a bad email attachment or link, the hackers who sent the email can access the organization's computer network to steal valuable information or bring it down. Malicious users can use email attachments to send out valuable company data or documents to outsiders. Both problems can be very expensive, costing a company money, exposing valuable data and hurting the company's reputation.

The CMSS specification allows the risk assessment manager to determine a vulnerability's potential impact on the network and then take remediation steps to secure the system.

The Friends of the Brown County Library are having their very first Kids and Teens Books & More Sale.? The dates for this new event are July 26 ? 28th.

Not only is this a great chance for parents like me, whose kids are voracious about all types of media, it could be a great opportunity for teachers and older students to refresh their personal collections and school libraries.?? You might even see some library discards at the sale, too.

Frugal Family Tree: CA State Fair Red Cup Showdown Competition ...

Over the weekend I had the most awesome fair experience ever! I had the chance to attend the Seattle's Best Red Cup Showdown Competition. My husband and I go every year to the CA State Fair to celebrate the anniversary of our first date. This year was 14 years since our first date, it was a wonderful and memorable way to celebrate. Our son is only 2 1/2 so my husband and son arrived at the end of the competition, just in time to hear the winners announced. I was there from the beginning. Even having a chance to chat with the adorable Jeff Mauro, the Sandwich King before the event started. He is so personable and funny. A perfect host for a fun competition like the #RedCupShowdown.

The event was held in the grandstand of the Cal Expo Horse Track. We have been there a few times to watch the horse races. This was the first time I have attended a food competition. I love to watch the cooking shows on Food Network and of course Sandwich King is one of them. Seeing it in person was awesome. The jokes Jeff told, the stories the contestants shared about the inspiration of their drinks and the smell of coffee in the air made it just about perfect.

The contestants from all over California had 5 minutes to make their drink from brew to final touches. It was exciting to watch the contestants in action. Before the competition started I sat down with a contestant to ask her a few questions about why she was competing and little about her. Her name is Kathleen and is from Sacramento, born and raised. She told me her inspiration story for her Seattle's Best Coffee Red Cup Showdown entry.

Here is what Kathleen wrote for the inspiration for her drink:

"Coffee comforts me. Coffee is memories of laughing and sharing with my family, those here and those gone, holidays, and Sunday mornings. Coffee is home and all that that means to me."

Her drink is inspired by Black Cake, a story and recipe that New Yorker Laurie Colwin shared in her book, Home Cooking, A Writer in the Kitchen. Laurie Colwin wrote for the New Yorker and Gourmet magazines about cooking while she cooked and told family stories over a cup of coffee. Kathleen was inspired to recreate the Black Cake in a coffee cup. She named it Orange Spice Brulot, for the burnt sugar ingredient, the translation in French.

This is what Kathleen said Black Cake is and how it tastes:

"Black Cake is a traditional West Indian fruitcake. It is made with burnt sugar, spices, and fruit all soaked in wine and rum. Orange Spice Brulot has the richness of coffee, the m?lange of spices, the sweet candied orange, and the infusion of orange scented cream. The result is dark, burnt sugar sweetness with the intensity of a Black Cake."

After having the pleasure of meeting Kathleen I asked her if I could share her recipe with the readers of my blog. The scent of her drink as she made it for the judges filled the air. Its was wonderful!

Here is Kathleen's Recipe for Orange Spice Brulot:

?Ingredients:
1-cup Demerara sugar crystals
2/3 cup boiling water
2 large oranges
1 ? cups sugar
6 cloves
4 ? tablespoons Seattle?s Best Coffee Level 4
3/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1-tablespoon orange zest
? cup Half and Half
3 cinnamon sticks

Burnt Sugar Syrup:
1-cup Demerara sugar crystals
2/3 cup boiling water
Place sugar in small frying pan and melt on medium heat, stirring constantly until syrup
forms, about 15 minutes. Add boiling water slowly and stir constantly on medium low
until bubbly, brown and foamy, about 15 minutes. Strain into a bowl. Cool.

Candied Orange Peels:
2 large oranges
? cups sugar + ?-cup sugar
1 ? cups water
Zest one tablespoon orange and set aside for infusing Half and Half. Peel remaining
oranges into strips. Boil ?-cup water in saucepan, add peels and cook for one minute.
Drain, rinse peels in cool water and repeat boiling. Place sugar and 1 ? cups water in
saucepan and bring to boil. Add cooked, drained, orange peels. Lower heat and simmer
for 15 minutes. Remove peels and place on parchment paper to dry for one hour. Place
? cup sugar in small bowl and dredge peels in sugar. Place on new parchment paper to
dry for 1 hour. Store in container or plastic bag.

Orange Infused Half and Half:
Place 1 tablespoon of orange zest into ? cup Half and Half. Let infuse overnight. Strain
peels out before using.

Coffee:
For each serving
2 cloves
1 ? tablespoons Seattle?s Best Coffee Level 4
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Place in filter and brew with 6 oz. boiling water

In coffee cup, 1 teaspoon Burnt Sugar Syrup and 3-4 Candied Orange Peels. Pour coffee
over. Stir until syrup dissolved. Add Orange Infused Half and Half to taste. Garnish
with cinnamon stick.

Savor.

After the 3 Rounds of Competitors made their drinks and the judges sampled them, Jeff and the other two judges took a break to go make their decisions. Everyone in the audience had their favorite entries from their stories, mine of course being my new friend Kathleen. Finally they judges came back to announce third, second and first place. I was thrilled when they announced Kathleen had won second place!!! I was so happy for her. The first place winner Liz from Lodi CA was very nervous about her entry, she almost left the competition! Thankfully she stayed and went on with the competition. Her drink was a Caramel Apple Coffee Drink, I thought it sounded perfect for a fair, who does not love a caramel apple at the fair. It just goes to show anyone to not doubt themselves, that we are our own worst critic! It definitely inspired me to realize we have to step outside our comfort zone sometimes to really shine. Congrats Liz, we will be cheering for you to win in New York.

After the competition my husband, son and I all headed to the Seattle's Best Coffee booth on the fairgrounds. We had the chance to get our picture taken in the Red Cup, spin the Seattle's Best wheel for prizes, taste a few of the Seattle's Best Coffee fair drinks and were given samples of the coffee to brew at home.




Seattle's Best Coffee is delicious and affordable. You can find it at Walmart and often coupons for the coffee in the Sunday paper.
